About the book
Howard Roark is a talented but unconventional architect who refuses to bend his work to public taste or traditional style, even at the cost of professional failure. Through his conflict with the conformist colleague Peter Keating and the influential critic Ellsworth Toohey, Rand contrasts individualism and integrity against collectivist conformity. The novel was Rand’s breakthrough as a writer and laid the philosophical groundwork she would later expand in “Atlas Shrugged.” Published in 1943, it remains one of the most widely read novels about artistic and personal independence.
